Mass Gesture Drawings

I used my charcoal stick to make the dark values in the front of the pliers. 

Modeled Line Drawing

I used my charcoal pencil to draw horizontal and vertical lines to show the shape of the hammer. I used curved lines to describe the roundness of the handle on the hammer. I also used hatch marks to make the shadow from the hammer.

I enjoy this piece because of it's imagery as well as the message behind it. I really enjoy the mark making that Henrik used in the persons face and hands. Though the dark marks aren't blended or subtle, they show the shadows in his face, so you can tell where the light is hitting him. I also like the marks around the person's eyes because they show how he is tired or maybe even beaten.  As far as the message goes, I really like the way he is portraying censorship. Though I am not 100% sure what he is trying to say about censorship exactly, this piece makes you wonder about censorship and how it relates to the artist. Maybe to him, he had had to censor himself to fit society's standards and it feels to him as though he had to "cut off his tongue." It's a very strong and important message.

I really enjoy the color used in this piece, as well as the mark making that went into creating the big and small details in the drawing. The message behind this piece really speaks to me because it seems almost as if these are zombies crawling around with money all over their bodies. The message may be about how money controls most people and the things that they do, and in some cases, people who may be so controlled as if they are zombies.

This is a very strong piece because of the way the artist used a shape to describe someone doing a specific action. I really like the way they used paint to fill in the shapes instead of just black and white. You could say that the colors they used set some kind of mood for the piece. The warmer colors make me think of the setting being somewhere very warm and dry. There is also visual heirarchy because of the way the shapes are placed on the page. You can tell that the woman in the picture is on top of the hill, and it's as if the view point is taken from below the hill. 

Single Line Drawing

1) I used the two different sheets of paper to combine the top and bottom half of my body. The shape of the paper doesn't have much meaning, it was a very rushed drawing. 

2) Yes, I did use the continuous line technique. 

3) Next time, I would definitely use a darker pencil or maybe even a thick sharpie. I also wouldn't be as careful the next time I do a continuous line drawing, because I feel as though a drawing has more expression and meaning when you draw on your first instinct.

Building With Ellipses #5

I used the tools in a creative way in this piece by using the side of the charcoal stick to block in the dark values. Then I used my eraser to cut lines down the middle of the flashlight where the light was hitting it. I also used dark lines on/off switch on the flashlight.

Building With Ellipses #4

I used my tools creatively in this piece by using the side of the charcoal stick to make the dark values on the side of the flute. Then I went in with an eraser and cut lines down the flute where the light was hitting the metal. I also used the smaller charcoal pencil to draw the lines near the hole in the flute, and then I smudged the charcoal inward to show the gradient in the hole piece. 

Building With Ellipses #3

I used the tools in a creative way by smudging the charcoal with a paper towel in a circular motion inside of the ellipses. This helped to make a gradient effect. I also brought the highlights out in the creases where the pipe on the side was sticking out, using an eraser, to show how the light was hitting it.

One way I used my tools in a creative way is by using my eraser to cut lines in the side of the pipe where the light was hitting. I also used my eraser to bring out other highlights on the pipe.

One way I used my tools creatively in this piece was by smudging the dark parts of the charcoal outwards with a paper towel to get a gradient effect in the middle of the pipe. Another way was by lightly using an eraser to help show the depth inside the two ellipses.
